Ashmit in his late teens, hitting the rock bottom of what seems as the lowest point, though riding high on his fickle-minded hormones jerking his mood to sway & stay seamless. This situation coupled with ever increasing academic pressure, body changes and identity crisis ultimately creep a serpentine of hopelessness and worthlessness clinging, , crawling, poisoning and strangulating unabashedly all hopes and dreams. His parents, unaware about what's happening inside him, criticise him, scream at him, when they were his only hope.

  • He finds out ways not to study.
  • He keeps on lying on bed.
  • Why are you so lazy?
  • why don't you get it?
  • Why can't you be like other boys of your age?
  • Look at the grade card of your friends.

So on and so for the.
Without fail we all do it , unawaringly enlarging the cloud and deepening the stronghold of serpentine which is about to engulf our most precious being.

Let's ask The face that never seems to smile

A fading smile beginning with force transitioning finally into remorse,
Head down staring ground as if hope has eluded or eloped Gnawing hopelessness hitherto leapfrogged Casting shadows, till every ounce of self-worth dropped Staying awake still trapped Until someone comes bestowing new hope, untillreigning pessimism sapped.

That face is one of us. We notice at times and ignore it other times thinking that she or he might be facing some personal issues which should not be interferred into. Did we take a minute to lower down our guard and ask that person " Are you ok"? "Is everything fine?"" whats the matter, why are you so down?". This might have saved someone from drowning to levels where even sharing too can't cure.

We all can bring about a change, how, let's find out Let's be aware

Awareness here is key to the solution. Let's first find out what actually is depression. What are its symptoms:- According to DSM v ( Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) atleast 5 of these 9 symtoms should be present nearly every day for period of two weeks to be called as major depressive disorder.

  • Hopelessness-depressed mood and irritation.
  • Decreased interest or pleasure most of the day.
  • Significant weight change(5%) or change in appetite.
  • Change in sleep-insomnia or hypersomnia.
  • Change in activity- psychomotor agitation or retardation.
  • Fatigue or loss of energy.
  • Feeling of guilt or worthlessness.
  • Diminishing concentration
  • Suicidal ideation

If five or more symptoms persist for more than two weeks and seem to persist after your counselling then seek professional advice.

Why depression happens

It is mostly attributable to Stress-stress is most important precipitator of depression
Changes in hormone levels
Genetic disposition
Traumatic event

Improving sleeping habits-

Brisk walk or exercise which induces happy hormoneThis is regarded as equivalent to anti depression medication or psychotherapy. Introducing bananas in a diet known for increasing serotonin levels. Maintaining a happy environment at home Music/ dance or following one's hobby can work wonders. Let's chuck judgement- we all are tired of judging people, their situations and saving ourselves from being judged by camouflaging , exaggerating or most resorted to-keeping it under sheets. The objective is not to wash your dirty linen out in public but to have some trusted people around you with whom you can vent out. Stop keeping it enclosed in your heart making it sink and suffer, Vent it out!!!!!!!!! Simple!!!!!

Stop comparisons- Everyone is different and unique. Follow your dreams and do not let worry or not in accordance with people who judge take you over. your child every night "You are the most special person for me and I love you without any conditions attached. me your mother/father." Make him or her understand that you need to know everything, tell them that you may get mad in the beginning but eventually will help you get out of the situation. sensibly and consciously and not driven by compulsive behavior you will always find optimism surrounding you. Circle of concern / influence- we can only follow an action oriented approach and do things which are in our circle of influence. Circle of influence is what we can do and a circle of concern is outside people or policies or weather or circumstances beyond our scope of control.Beyond that we can not exercise our control so leave the circle of concern to its concern!!! Stay happy and stay calm, and if alone we are unable to do it then let's get some help to burst that cloud into shower and hoodwink that serpentine into being our servile.
